The ‘PM Vishwakarma’ Scheme is a new initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to support artisans, craftsmen, and those involved in traditional skills.
It’s a significant step to preserve and promote India’s rich tradition of craftsmanship and heritage.
The scheme was officially unveiled on September 17th, which also marks the occasion of Vishwakarma Jayanti and coincidentally, Prime Minister Modi’s birthday.
The scheme will benefit a wide range of individuals engaged in traditional crafts and skills across rural and urban areas in India.
It covers a diverse group of artisans, including carpenters, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, potters, sculptors, cobblers, tailors, and many others.
These are the unsung heroes of Indian society, who have been carrying forward our traditional crafts for generations.
Under this scheme, the prospective beneficiaries will be registered for free through common service centers (CSC), using the biometric-based PM Vishwakarma portal.
The government has allocated a big budget of Rs 13,000 crore to fully fund this initiative.

The main goal of the scheme is to enhance the quality and reach of products and services created by artisans and craftspeople. It will help them become part of domestic and global value chains.
Additionally, it seeks to empower members of the Other Backward Classes, who have been engaged in these occupations for several decades.
