UK eVisas: Here is the complete guide

Heading to the UK for a short trip, job, education or long-term stay? Holding confusions about a UK eVisa and an electronic travel authorisation (ETA)? Here is the complete guide to help you better understanding the scenario.
You need to check the travel document that suits your purpose. Some people just need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) for short visits. Others need a UK eVisa linked to their immigration status.
This is an UK eVisa
UK eVisas are digital records of permission to stay, hold a job or study in the country for a certain duration. These include identity details and the conditions of your stay. Instead of carrying physical documentation, your details are stored online.
This system is gradually replacing older physical documents, such as:
- biometric residence permits (BRPs)
- biometric residence cards (BRCs)
- visa vignettes or ink stamps on passports
Setting up an UKVI account
To access and manage your eVisa, you are going to need a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. This applies to most people staying in the country for more than 6 months or those holding specific employment or education visas under 6 months.
- register using your email address and phone number
- verify your identity and link your visa
- submit one of these (if possible) – valid passport and visa application number; valid passport and BRP number; and an expired BRP card (valid for up to 18 months after expiry)
