Trinamool Congress Sweeps Victory In West Bengal Despite Internal Strife

As Mamata Banerjee handles power tussle within the party, the Bengal Tigress has spearheaded sweeping victories in the state itself. Four towns have been captured by the Trinamool Congress in civil polls.

Known as the satellite city for Chandannagar, Asansol and Siliguri, Bidhannagar has been a powerful win for the party. All this has happened in the midst of the power tussle that is creating factions in the party. But taking on to twitter Ms. Banerjee was evidently happy. In her tweet thanking her patrons for the votes she said, “It is once again an overwhelming victory of Ma, Mati, Manush. My heartiest congratulations to the people of Asansol, Bidhannagar, Siliguri and Chandanagore for having put their faith and confidence on All India Trinamool Congress candidates in the municipal corporation elections.”

Only Congress gave any competition as BJP got none and a majority of seats went to Trinamool Congress. The Trinamool won 39 out of 41 seats in Bidhannagar, almost all except one in Chandernagore and In Asansol, the Trinamool scored 66 of 106 seats and was leading in five wards, while the BJP won in five seats and the CPI(M) and Congress, two each.

According to political analysts, for Mamata Banerjee, the civic polls are more affirmation of her party’s dominance in Bengal after its stupendous victory in the assembly elections last year, when it not only beat the BJP by a huge margin but also reduced the Congress party and the Left to zero.

Meanwhile the fight for mayorship has already started in the four towns. The fight comes down between existing aspirants. For example, in Bidhannagar Sabyasachi Dutta and Krishna Chakraborty are both angling for the post. Both candidates have started lobbying as well. Sabyasachi Dutta met both Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee and Krishna Chakraborty also met Mamata Banerjee.

Abhishek is vying for his own power within the party, due to which Mamata Banerjee decided to dissolve the National Working Committee. Taking it as the best opportunity, she restructured the 2017 national working committee, to form a new one with 20 members and some previous names dropped.

According to Partha Chatterjee, minister and the state secretary-general of TMC, “After being re-elected as the chairperson of the party, Banerjee had named six party leaders who were taking the decisions to run the party. On Saturday, Banerjee met the leaders and the new committee was formed. The office bearers will be named by Banerjee later.”
