Reservation of Indian train tickets is a game. Being able to increase your chances of securing a confirmed seat, even at the busiest time of the year, by a large percentage, takes clever thought and a few tricks. These are tips that are practical and legal, and that passengers abide by.
Make a reservation ahead of time

Give RAC a trial, it is almost a full berth
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) is frequently changed to a confirmed berth prior to departure. When you get RAC, it is worth checking; cancellations liberate full berths.
Apply Vikalp/automatic upgradation facilities
Instead, use Vikalp or waitlist-auto options that will automatically reassign you to another train in case one is available – it will give you a better chance of being on that train than being on WL.
Track cancellations of last-minute confirmation
Check PNR and seat availability often after chart preparation – lots of seats become available as a result of cancellations or quota release. Bring apps to notify of PNR changes.

New rules restrict the number of minutes of agent booking in Tatkal opening; real Aadhaar-verified users receive priority – so, be prepared to book yourself immediately at the opening.

In case of urgency, Tatkal or splitting party of two PNRs (where applicable) may come in handy. Premium Tatkal is also viable, but a balance is needed between price and need.
