Tokyo Selected To Host 2025 World Athletics Championships

After Tokyo, Nairobi, Kenya, Silesia, Poland, & Singapore all submitted bids, the World Athletics Council chose Tokyo to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

On Thursday, track and field officials announced that Tokyo would host the 2025 world championships. This brought athletes back to the venue of the Olympics from a year ago, where they performed in front of virtually empty stadiums.

The championships were chosen by the World Athletics Council from among bids from Singapore, Silesia, Poland, and Nairobi, Kenya.

Sebastian Coe, the president of World Athletics, stated that although the voting was close, Japan prevailed because of its strong business ties and the “people resource” that was available in Tokyo to organize the competition.

He would not rule out the possibility that Kenya or another nation in Africa, a continent that has never hosted the event, might one day host the sport’s premier competition.

It is crucial that we collaborate with Africans to ensure that their time arrives and that it does so at the appropriate time, according to Coe.

The stadium for the Olympics cost more than $1.4 billion to construct in Japan. The Olympics were delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and held last summer with attendance limitations.

Sydney McLaughlin and Karsten Warholm both set world records in the 400-meter hurdle finals thanks to Tokyo’s cutting-edge track.

While McLaughlin completed in 51.46 seconds while Warholm ran in 45.94, the record was broken in Eugene earlier this year (51.41).

Elaine Thompson-Herah broke Florence Griffith-33-year-old Joyner’s Olympic record by finishing the 100 in 10.61 seconds.

The pandemic also caused the world championships this year, which kick off on Friday at Hayward Stadium in Eugene, to be postponed by one year. Hungary’s Budapest will host the games the following year.

According to Coe, the losing towns expressed interest in participating in the 2027 and 2029 championship bid rounds.

Additionally, Tallahassee, Florida in 2026 and Medulin, Croatia in 2024 will host the World Athletics cross country championships.
