Tokyo Olympics 2020, day 6: Atanu Das, PV Sindhu reach closer to medal while Mary Kom loses bout

India’s ace archer Atanu Das progressed after defeating former Olympic and World Champion Oh Jinhyek of South Korea to reach the individual pre-quarterfinals. Das surprised Oh as he scored a perfect ten by hitting the bull’s eye. 

Das had defeated Oh before, too, in the shoot-off for a bronze medal in the 2019 Asian Championships in Bangkok. However, managing the most extreme pressure situation and succeeding at the most remarkable phase of the Olympics was something more exceptional. 

On the other hand, PV Sindhu, the most promising Indian professional badminton player in the Tokyo Olympics 2020, also advanced to the quarterfinals in badminton women’s singles by defeating Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt.

On day 6 of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Sindhu maintained two sets points in the second Game and crushed Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi by 21-13, 22-20. Sindhu easily won the first set, and the second set was a real thrill ride.

Sindhu came very close to winning a Gold Medal against Spanish badminton superstar Carolina Marin in the 2016 Rio Games.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Sindhu said, “I was just a participant back then; however, people’s expectations have risen, and they say Sindhu has to get a Medal this time.” Currently, she has been training hard under Korean coach Park Tae-sang for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Indian fans had high hopes from MC Mary Kom, the 38-year-old six world titleholder, to get a gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics. However, in the flyweight (48-51kg) category event, Mary had put up her best fight but sadly lost the bout for quarterfinals to Columbia’s Valencia Victoria by 3/2.
