The major rollout of the 5G service in India

The 5G network is now in its final phases of development in India. Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea have been working for a long time toward making the 5G network. The government has also announced that the rollout in India is on track.

Earlier this year the Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, confirmed that the 5G network is already in its final stage of development. Reportedly, India is now involved in the development of 6G standards.

As per media reports, it is expected that the 5G will be rolled out in 2022. Big cities would be the first places for the launch of the 5G network. 5G technology operates in three frequency bands – lower frequency, mid-band frequency and high frequency. The high-band spectrum has the fastest speed of all three bands.

As per media reports, revenue from 5G services is expected to rise at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 164 per cent over the next five years, contributing up to 1 per cent of global GDP or $1.3 trillion in revenue by 2030.

As per reports, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is likely to release its recommendations on the auction of the 5G spectrum soon. The mega spectrum auctions will pave the way for next-generation 5G services to be rolled out in India.  The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working on other processes to hold the auction as soon as possible.

Reportedly, last year, the government planned to launch 5G services by August 15 and to conduct the auction in April-May. However, the launch is likely to get delayed beyond the May 2022 timeline because of the challenges brought by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Telecom operator Airtel has been demonstrating and testing 5G, while IT services company Tech Mahindra has built 5G applications. Reportedly, Airtel will launch its 5G services in India after the spectrum auctions are concluded.

Vodafone Idea has announced earlier this year a 5G partnership with Ciena to prepare for the 5G deployment. Last year, Google invested $4.5 billion in Jio Platforms. Businessman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, Mukesh Ambani, also said that India must make the 5G roll-out a priority for the development of the country.
