The National Sports Awards of India are the prizes & honors given by the Indian government to sportspersons. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports presents the sports awards every year.
On the 29th of August, the President of India traditionally awards them at a ceremony hosted at the Presidential Palace.
The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award is the highest honor awarded to a sportsperson in India, and it was established in 1991-92.

Individuals receive it for their “lifetime contribution to sports development.” It is for athletes who have made a positive impact on other athletes and sports via their achievements and who keep supporting sports even after retiring from active competition.
The Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar was established in 2009. This award recognizes sports persons as well as commercial and public organizations who have ‘playing a visible role in the area of sports promotion and development’ over the last 3 years’ duration.
