Tamil Nadu CM Orders Investigation After Doctor Stabbed in Chennai Hospital
A doctor in Chennai was stabbed inside the government-run Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Guindy on Wednesday. The attacker reportedly upset over his mother’s treatment complications entered the doctor’s room pretending to be an outpatient, police said.
The victim Dr. Balaji Jaganathan, an oncology specialist, suffered severe injuries to his neck and chest and is now in the ICU according to hospital officials. Hospital staff detained the attacker on the spot and handed him over to the police.
According to initial reports the suspect arrived with three friends and attacked the doctor with a knife inflicting multiple wounds. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed shock, stating that the attacker had been arrested immediately.
ANI shared an update on X profile, “Tamil Nadu Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin visits Kalaignar Centenary Multy speciality government hospital in Chennai where a 25-year-old man stabbed a doctor who was on duty today.”
“Dr. Balaji will receive all necessary treatment, and a detailed investigation is underway,” Stalin shared on X. He emphasized the importance of protecting government doctors and assured that steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents.
The attack comes as the Supreme Court establishes a task force to review doctor safety following recent violent incidents including the murder of a doctor in Kolkata.
