The plea refers to hate speeches that were delivered at an event in Haridwar organised by Yati Narsinghanand. Another such event was held in Delhi by ‘Hindu Yuva Vahini’. Speakers were heard calling for the “genocide of members” of a community, the PIL (public interest litigation) stated. Appearing for the petitioners, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, urged the bench to read the transcript of the highly inflammatory speeches allegedly made in Haridwar. Advocate Sibal has demanded that the next hearing of case be held on January 17. He stressed that such events are also being organised across India.
Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana issued the said notice on the plea that was filed by journalist Qurban Ali and former Patna High Court judge and senior advocate Anjana Prakash, seeking a direction for an “independent, credible and impartial investigation” by a Special Investigation Team or SIT into the incidents of hate speeches at events in Haridwar and Delhi. The Supreme Court bench has allowed the petitioners to give representation to local authorities against organizing any future ‘Dharam Sansad’ event.
Haridwar’s Dharam Sansad was a three-day event that saw many hate speeches directly targeting the Muslim community, calling for targeted assassination. The speeches demanded the establishment of “Hindu Rashtra” and called for open killing of Muslims to achieve the same. Yati Narsinghanand, who is facing several FIRs in UP, was heard calling for a “war against Muslims” and urged “Hindus to take up weapons” to ensure a “Muslim didn’t become the Prime Minister in 2029.”
