Sunita Williams’ Space Memories: India’s Beauty from Above

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams was mesmerized by the breathtaking view of India from space. After spending 286 days on the International Space Station (ISS), she shared her thoughts on how India looked from above.
“India is amazing. Every time we flew over the Himalayas, my fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore captured incredible pictures. It was just stunning,” she said.
Williams, who has Indian roots, described the landscape as a blend of colors and textures. She spoke about the fishing fleets off the Mumbai and Gujarat coasts that acted as a “beacon” while flying over the region. She was also fascinated by the network of city lights, which looked magical both at night and during the day.
Excited about NASA’s upcoming Axiom mission, she praised Subhanshu Shukla, an Indian Air Force test pilot, who will soon be traveling to space.
Williams expressed her hope to collaborate with India’s space program and share her experiences with aspiring astronauts. “India is a great country with a strong democracy, and I’d love to help them grow in space exploration,” she said.
On a lighter note, she mentioned her plans to visit India soon, and when her co-traveler Wilmore asked if he could join, she laughed and assured him, “Absolutely! But be ready for some spicy food!”
Sunita Williams and Wilmore initially left for the ISS for an eight-day mission in June aboard the Boeing Starliner. However, technical issues kept them in space for much longer. They finally returned to Earth on March 19, landing safely in SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft.
Her journey might have been unexpected, but the memories of India from space will stay with her forever.
