Sri Lanka wins third ODI against India by three wickets

Sri Lanka had put an end to their losing streak on Friday as the Island nation registered its first win against India, who had already won the series by 2-1. Avishka Fernando was no doubt the star of the match, paving the way for Lankans to register their first win in the now-concluded ODI series.

Sri Lanka needed 227 runs from 47 overs after the rain did the damage restricting the Indian side to a below 250 total. Though as the Sri lankan side started the second innings, within a few minutes the scoreboard moved to the wicket of the opener– Minod Bhanuka.

India’s bowling magic seemed to have worked only during the initial overs as later on Rajapaksa along with Fernando took the charge of the team and partnered for an impressive 109-run stand till the next wicket. After a great fightback, Rajapaksa ended his consistent hitting against Sakariya’s bowling, who sent back the Sri Lankan batsman for 65.

Sakariya also was able to get Dhananjaya de Silva effectively restricting the Sri Lankans to 151 for three wickets. But still, it was long before the Sri Lankan side gave in to the hands of a tough side.

Fernando was still there to take the score close to the required total. While the attacking batsman was on his task, India managed to get two more wickets. One of them was Rahul Chahar’s first international wicket where he dismissed the skipper Dasun Shanaka on the first ball itself.

But things quickly changed when Fernando was dismissed for 76 by Chahar but somehow the home side managed to pass the stage of uncertainty with class and won the match with overs to spare. The match started with India winning the toss and Dhawan choosing to bat first. However, the team could not get a strong start due to the early dismissal of Dhawan at the hands of Dushmantha Chameera.

Now the emphasis is on the much-anticipated series of the shortest format that will be beginning on Sunday. The match, just kike the ODI series, will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
