Sony and Honda Motor will partner to develop and sell battery-electric vehicles. Honda will be responsible for manufacturing the vehicles. Sony will produce the mobility service platform for the vehicles.
Both companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to produce new-age electric vehicles. The firms shared their plan to come up with the first electric vehicle under the joint venture by 2025. More details about the product will be announced soon.
Honda is an automobile major that has a substantial presence in India. Sony is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation. Sony also has a presence in the Indian market with its expertise in new-age automobile technology.
Both companies issued a joint statement to underline the basic agreement. The statement read, “On March 4, Sony and Honda discussed and examined strategic alliances to create mobility and mobility services in a new era.”
In future, the firms will also discuss various legally binding final contracts. According to India Today, the electric vehicles will be produced at Honda’s existing vehicle manufacturing plant. Sony will produce a mobility service platform for the new company.
Reportedly, the new joint venture comes as an extension to Sony’s earlier plan to come up with a firm named Sony Mobility Inc. Sony will extend its expertise to develop electric vehicles and related technologies. Sony had announced its intention of developing electric vehicles at the CES 2022 held in January 2022.
Reportedly, the firms can come up with a completely new electric vehicle under the new brand. Not many details have been shared on the new company as of yet.
This move comes at a time when Apple has also been rumoured to work on its own electric vehicle. Earlier, Sony was seeking a partner who can contribute to its electric vehicle project.
