Shab-e-Barat: Embracing the spirit of forgiveness and reflection

One of the holiest festivals which is observed in the Islamic calendar is the Shab-e-Barat, in 2025 it is set to be observed from the evening of February 13 (Thursday) until the evening of February 14 (Friday) as per the Hijri calendar. The Islamic Relief worldwide has stated that “However the exact date may vary depending on the sighting of the moon”.
The word “Shab” originated from the Persian language which stands for night whereas the “Barat” is an Arabic word which means salvation and forgiveness. That is why it is called as ‘Night of Forgiveness’.
"When Friday comes, the angels sit at the doors of the Masjid and record who comes to #Jummah prayers. Then, when the Imam comes out, the angels roll up their scrolls." – Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

When we turn the wheel of time, the history of Shab-e-Barat traces its route from Prophet Muhammad who entered into the city of Makkah on this auspicious day. Another belief of the Sunni Muslim community states that on this day, God saved the Ark of Noah from the flood and the people around the world are celebrating this day to commemorate that. It is strongly believed that during this holy night the God will be more forgiving and the sincere prayers can help to wipe off their sins.
It is observed with great devotion across the nations which includes India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Turkey, Central Asian Countries (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan)
