Reliance Jio completes 5G planning for 1,000 cities in India

Indian telecommunications firm Reliance Jio said that it has completed the 5G coverage planning for 1,000 cities in India. Commercial high-speed 5G services will be rolled out in various cities across the country in 2022.

This coverage planning will enable the operator to roll out 5G services quickly once the government awards the 5G spectrum later this year.

Jio said in a statement, “5G coverage planning has been completed for 1,000 top cities across the country.” The company said that it has been running trials on advanced use cases across Healthcare and Industrial Automation on its network.

Reportedly, Jio is now testing the rollout of its 5G services in the country using various services including heat maps, 3D maps and ray-tracing technology. The company is also testing its own indigenously developed 5G RAN and Core technologies.

On January 19, Jio had announced that it paid Rs 30,791 crore, comprising accrued interest, to the Department of Telecom (DoT) to clear entire spectrum payments liabilities that the company acquired before auctions. Earlier, the minister of communications, Ashwini Vaishnav, announced that the 5G spectrum auction would take place across the country in 2022. The Indian government is expected to award frequencies for the provision of 5G services in April or May 2022. 5G is often regarded as the main feature of the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution. 5G technology operates in three frequency bands – lower frequency, mid-band frequency and high frequency.

Telecom service providers asked the central government to maintain the pricing low of the 5G spectrum. Reportedly, the government of India expects local operators to launch 5G services in some parts of the country by August 2022.

In 2018, The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had recommended a reserve price of INR 4.92 billion (currently $66.5 million) per megahertz for the 3.3-3.6 GHz band.
