Severe rains and crosswinds in Chennai have forced the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to suspend arrivals at the Chennai Airport on Thursday from 1:15 pm to 6 pm. The departures will continue, however. The decision was taken “considering the safety aspect of passengers and severity of wind”.
A red alert has been issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai as incessant rains have killed 14 in the state of Tamil Nadu so far. The heavy rainfall expected to be dumped due to depression in Bay of Bengal that is heading north-west has led to red alert in parts of Tamil Nadu including northern Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts, on Thursday.
IMD said that that weather system was moving at a speed of 14kmph north-west. At 11:30 am it lay about 80 km east-southeast of Chennai and 140 km east-northeast of Puducherry. The depression is expected to continue moving northwest and cross north Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts between Karaikal and Sriharikota, that is close to the north of Puducherry, by Thursday evening.
Heavy rains have resulted in water-logging on several Chennai roads, leading to closing down of at least 7 roads and 11 subways. Waterlogging on railway tracks have suspended suburban trains as well. Expected rough conditions in the waters have led to fishermen being advised not to venture out in the waters off the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on November 11.
Till Thursday morning, Chennai’s Ennore port has reported 12cm of rainfall, Nugambakkam received 11.4cm, MRC Nagar received 11.5cm, and Taramani received 10.3cm. Greater Chennai Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi said, “Keep adequate food and water ready. Keep all electronic devices charged for communication.
