Pune Bypoll Election Results 2023: BJP Wins Chinchwad, Congress Kasba Peth
BJP’s Ashwini Laxman Jagtap has won Pune’s Chinchwad Assembly bypoll by a margin of 36,168 votes. She will be the 1st female MLA to represent Maharashtra Assembly.
The results of the Kasba Peth and Pimpri Chinchwad byelections in Pune offered the BJP cause for celebration as well as cause for concern on Thursday.
The byelections in Kasba Peth, a BJP bastion, were won by Congress’s Ravindra Dhangekar, dealing a severe blow to the party.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi, which included the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party, and the Shiv Sena faction led by Uddhav Thackeray, supported Congress candidate Dhangekar in the Kasba constituency, which is located in the historic part of Pune city.
After 20 rounds of voting, Dhangekar defeated BJP candidate Hemant Rasane by a margin of more than 10,000 votes.
Ajit Pawar, the leader of the NCP and the leader of the opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, congratulated Ravindra Dhangekar on his victory in the Kasba Peth byelection.
Aaditya Thackeray, the head of the Shiv Sena (UBT), congratulated Kasba and Pune voters for choosing Ravindra Dhangekar to defend the Constitution and democracy.
Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Rajya Sabha MP and leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), also praised Dhangekar for overcoming the BJP in the Kasba Peth by-elections. “People’s vote proves victorious,” she tweeted after Dhangekar’s triumph.
As much as the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition, led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, was alarmed by the Congress’ victory in the Kasba Peth bypolls, the news of its candidate’s victory in the Pimpri Chinchwad bypolls soothed the saffron party.
Ashwini Laxman Jagtap, who was supported by the BJP, outperformed nearest challenger Nana Kate of the NCP by more than 36,000 votes, with independent candidate Rahul Kalate trailing well behind.
After 26 rounds of voting, Ashwini Jagtap was proclaimed the victor in the Pimpri Chinchwad byelection.
Following the polls, Ashwini Jagtap congratulated the BJP and Shiv Sena office holders and credited their enormous support for helping her win.
After the passing of BJP MLAs Mukta Tilak and Ashwini’s husband Laxman Jagtap, the Election Commission of India ordered byelections in the Kasba Peth and Chinchwad seats on February 26.
These were the first elections held after the Election Commission of India gave Eknath Shinde’s Sena group the name “Shiv Sena” and the “bow and arrow” symbol.
