Prime Minister Narendra Modi has topped the list of “most popular” world leaders with 71% approval ratings. He emerged as the most popular leader worldwide, leaving US (United States) President Joe Biden behind.
According to the global approval rating released by Morning Consult Political Intelligence, among the 13 leaders surveyed by the research firm, PM Modi tops the list with a 71 percent approval rating. The ratings as of January 2022, stated that 71 percent of the average Indian population approved of PM Modi, while only 21% disapproved of him.
Mexico’s Andrés Manuel López Obrador is in the second position with 66 per cent rating. Italy’s Mario Draghi is at a 60 percent rating. The US president Joe Biden is ranked at number six with a 43 percent rating. Biden’s popularity began dropping in mid-August in 2021 due to a surge in Covid-19 deaths. The hasty withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan also affected Biden’s popularity.
Biden is followed by Canadian President Justin Trudeau, also at 43 percent rating, and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison at 41 percent rating. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, embroiled in the ‘party gate’ scandal, ranked the lowest among the leaders surveyed with a 26 percent approval rating. The latest approval rating is based on data collected from January 13 to 19, 2022. Reportedly, the company is currently tracking the approval ratings of government leaders of Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, France, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Spain, Britain, and the US.
In May 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also topped the list with an 84 percent rating. However, in May 2021, the approval rating dipped to 63% when the second wave of coronavirus was at its peak in the country. In September 2021, PM Modi once again ranked as the most approved global leader.
