Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces booster shots for frontline workers, 60-plus population; vaccination for 15-18 age group

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced booster shots for healthcare workers, frontline workers and those above 60. He also announced that vaccination will begin for children between 15 and 18 years from January 3.

PM Modi said that healthcare workers and frontline workers can be at a higher risk of contracting the covid infection if there is a surge of infection. In the wake of the Omicron variant threat, the booster shot will start from January 10 across the country for frontline workers and those above 60 years old.

Precaution dose for India

In his address to the nation on Christmas Day, PM Modi called the booster dose a ‘precaution dose’. The precaution dose reportedly denotes a third dose of the vaccine for the fully vaccinated people of the country. While talking about children’s health, he said that vaccinating children would help them to fight against the pandemic. It will also help to normalize teaching in schools. Now, 15-18 years are eligible for vaccination.

He also talked about the importance of social distancing, hygiene, and sanitiser. Reportedly, the administration of nasal vaccine and the world’s first DNA vaccine against Covid will also start in India soon. The field of DNA vaccination is developing rapidly, reported the World Health Organisation.

Reportedly, since the start of the year from 16 January till now, India has registered 141 crore vaccine doses. PM Modi also confirmed that 61 per cent of India’s population has received both the COVID-19 doses. Earlier, experts had advised the Centre that there should be a policy for a booster dose to fight against the Omicron variant of Covid-19. Now, the policy has been implemented for frontline workers and for people above 60 years.
