Pralhad Joshi suspends 12 Rajya Sabha MPs for indiscipline during the Monsoon session

New Delhi -12 Rajya Sabha members of parliaments have been suspended from the monsoon session after they were found to have engaged in indiscipline during the session on Monday. The opposition was left boiling after their suspension was announced for the entire session.

The reason behind their suspension was unruly conduct towards the end of the monsoon session in August. This is the same incident where marshals were called to control the whole situation as the opposition members stormed the Wall of the house to make their stand on the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021.

All the MPs belonged from the opposition parties–Congress, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena, and CPI and CPM. Paulo Devi Netam, Chhaya Verma, Ripun Bora, Rajamani Patel, Syed Nasir Hussain, and Akhilesh Prasad Singh were the six MPs from Congress while Dola Sen, Shanta Chhetri were the ones to be suspended from TMC.

Apart from that, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Anil Desai of Shiv Sena; Elamaram Kareem of CPM were also suspended. As for the CPI, Binoy Viswam was added to the list.

The decision was announced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi who said that the way opposition party members protested was “undemocratic” and “unprecedented”.

The decision was taken under Rule 256 of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Rajya Sabha and with this, these MPs have been suspended from entering the sessions for the entire Winter Session.

The decision has only been taken 13 times prior to now since 1962. The rule also allows the members of the parliamentarians to be terminated, which was done in 2010. After their suspension, all the opposition parties released a joint statement where they stated that it was not only unwarranted but also undemocratic suspension that the 12 MPs were imposed with.
