OTT Series ‘Wedding.con’ Reveals The Dark Reality of Online Dating Scams

A new documentary series titled “Wedding.con” is coming to Amazon Prime Video. This series, directed by the talented Tanuja Chandra, who you might remember from films like “Dushman” and “Qarib Qarib Singlle,” takes a deep and serious look into the world of dating and matrimonial fraud in India.

So, what’s this all about? “Wedding.con” tells the stories of five Indian women who faced a rather unfortunate and deceitful situation. These women were looking for life partners, a very common and respected pursuit in our society.

But, instead of finding true love, they encountered con men on dating or matrimonial sites. These men pretended to be suitable husbands, but their real intention was to deceive and swindle money from these women.

The amounts they took ranged from Rs 16 lakhs to a massive 1.5 crores. It’s not just about money; these women also endured emotional and, in some cases, physical abuse.

The docu-series, which is set to premiere on December 29, aims to shed light on this alarming issue. The trailer, already out on social media, gives us a glimpse of the harrowing experiences these women went through.

It starts with a powerful message about societal expectations around marriage, especially for women, and then unravels the shocking reality of these fraudulent schemes.

Tanuja Chandra, in her statement, expressed how important it was for her to bring this issue to a global audience. She applauds the courage of these women who, despite being victims, stood strong as survivors and chose to share their stories. Chandra believes that this series could play a crucial role in preventing such fraud in the future.

Interestingly, the series took several years to make, mainly due to the extensive research involved. And it’s worth noting that the production team comprised 35% female crew members, adding a significant perspective to the storytelling.
