Naveen Patnaik, chief minister of Odisha, led BJD has won a record 766 Zilla Parishad seats out of the available 853 seats in the rural elections. The state elections commission announced the results on Thursday confirming the projected score.
This is a remarkable victory for the party especially as far as the history of the three-tier panchayat elections in the state goes.
The BJP, the ruling national party, managed eight ZPs after winning 297 seats in 2017 but this time it rounded only till 42 seats. Congress on the other hand was the third popular party with 37 seats after coming down from 60 in the last elections.
“My sincere thanks to all of you for helping the BJD win the three-tier panchayat elections with unwavering love,” the Odisha chief minister said. He said this while thanking all the party workers. He also added that the victory also added to their confidence and strengthened their motivation to remain committed to public service. The leader and other state officials stressed that this is the victory of the workers who have been active on the ground since October last year when Patnaik himself was involved in visiting districts, especially in western Odisha to help them gain trust.
