Nepal student suicide: KIIT issues apology and terminates staff members, arrest made

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in the eastern state of Odisha has issued an apology in relation to its handling of a recent suicide case of an engineering student from Nepal and the subsequent demonstrations on the campus.
In its statement, the institution also said that disciplinary action has been taken against security staff and officials, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and dignity “of all students, including our dear Nepali students.”
Tensions started erupting at KIIT after Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year BTech student from Nepal, died of suicide on February 16. Her cousin alleged that Prakriti hanged herself in her hostel room after being blackmailed by a batchmate, reported India Times.
Other students from Nepal started alleging harassment after her suicide and KIIT officials responded to the serious protests on the campus by stating that it is closed sine die for all international students from Nepal. The situation has become a diplomatic headache.
