Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra has been nominated for the prestigious Laureus award 2022. It is an annual award ceremony honouring individuals and teams from the world of sports for their achievement.
He is now only the third Indian to fetch a Laureus nomination after former Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Sachin Tendulkar earlier won the Laureus Sporting Moment Award.
After his nomination for the award, Chopra wrote a tweet on his Twitter account. He said, “A special feeling to be nominated along with some exceptional athletes for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award.” Recently, Chopra was honoured with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) on the eve of Republic Day.
Last year, Chopra became only the second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal and first in track and field in Tokyo with a throw of 87.58 metres in his second attempt. Earlier, shooter Abhinav Bindra won a gold medal in an individual event at the Olympics.
Reportedly, five others have also been nominated for this Laureus prestigious award – Emma Raducanu, Daniil Medvedev, Pedri, Yulimar Rojas, and Ariarne Titmus.
The Laureus World Sports Awards was established in 1999 by Laureus Sport for Good Foundation founding patrons Daimler and Richemont. This year’s awards will be given to the athletes for their achievements in 2021. A jury of more than 1,300 of the leading sports journalists and broadcasters across the world have selected the nominees for this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards.
The winners will be revealed in April, following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy. The jury to select the winner is made up of 71 of the greatest sporting legends of all time. This year’s Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award will be one of the most competitive ever.
