18th Lok Sabha Speaker : Congress MP K Suresh against NDA’s Om Birla
The NDA has chosen to nominate Om Birla for the Lok Sabha Speaker post once more, ending days of speculation. Om Birla has served as the Speaker in the previous Lok Sabha sessions of Modi Government 2.0. According to sources Om Birla filled their nomination today.

In the previous two Lok Sabha elections the BJP nominated Sumitra Mahajan and Om Birla without challenge as the Lok Sabha Speaker, that time BJP had 2/3 of the majority in the house. In Modi 3.0 the BJP is largest party with 240 seats but it falls short of a majority by 32 seats and depends on allies like Nitish Kumar’s JDU and Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP to stay in power.

The opposition INDIA Bloc has called for the Deputy Speaker position
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge met with senior BJP leader and Union Minister Rajnath Singha and said that the Deputy Chairman post should given to the opposition party. Kharge highlighted the need to maintain healthy parliamentary traditions and consensus. It is important for democracy.

Birla also served in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly for three terms.
Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha in 2019. By this he became the first MP from Rajasthan to hold the position of Lok Sabha speaker. His selection, initially surprising to some has since been praised for his inclusive approach.
