Since the moment Mahendra Singh Dhoni donned jersey number seven, Indian cricket team, as well as fans, have always connected this particular number to the cricketer and former Indian skipper.
While many assume that the reason behind him selecting this number for his jersey is superstitious, he clarified on Thursday that it was the case. The keeper-batter has been sporting since his debut in 2007 and now when people think about it, number seven and Dhoni have become synonymous.
His fans, cricket lovers and experts suggested for the BCCI to retire this number jersey for any other cricketer as a mark of respect to MS Dhoni for his contribution to Indian cricket. But while that debate is still going on, Dhoni shared a very simple reason behind him donning this number.
He said that his date of birth is emblematic of the digit. “A lot of people initially thought that 7 is a lucky number for me and all of that. But I chose the number for a very simple reason,” he said while interacting with fans for India cement.

He explained that he was born on 7th of July which makes it the seventh day of the seventh month of the year. With this explanation, he ended many theories that came along with his jersey number. The 40-year-old cricketer further added that he did not want to get into all these things about what number will be good for him and all and hence he thought of using the date of birth as the number. He further added that post the selection of his jersey, whenever people used to ask the reason, he continued to add one thing or the other.
