Madhya Pradesh: Congress, BJP clash over a number of social media followers

An unprecedented war of words erupted between Madhya Pradesh Congress and the ruling BJP over the number of social media followers. While Madhya Congress claimed that it has more Twitter followers than the BJP, the ruling party is alleging that its rival is using fake followers to increase its social media presence.

As of Wednesday, MP Congress has more than 9.20 lakh followers on Twitter, while BJP has more than 7.84 lakh followers. Reportedly, MP Congress’ followers increased to over 9 lakh in just 15 months. Taking this into account,Madhya Pradesh BJP has accused the Congress party of using fake followers to increase its total count on the social media platform.

Speaking to the media, BJP state secretary Rahul Kothari said that the party conducted a research that found about 50 percent of Congress’ total Twitter followers are fake and inorganic. He added that an official complaint will be filed by the BJP with the cyber cell as well as the Election Commission.

“We have found that 50% of Congress followers are fake and inorganic. The way Congress leader Kamal Nath has managed followers from Pakistan and Syria has been exposed,” the BJP leader said, as quoted by TOI.

In response, the Congress party maintained that it is ahead of the ruling in its social media activities which has resulted in an increase in followers.

Congress state spokesperson Narendra Saluja alleged BJP of spreading lies instead of accepting the truth and boosting its social media activities. He also challenged the BJP of using the same tool they used to trace the details of fake followers of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

“BJP is not aware of the difference between inactive and fake followers. The website they have used to trace out the details also shows fake followers of PM Modi and CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan,” he said.

Later, BJP leader and MP Urban Administration Minister Bhupendra Singh retaliated by accusing Congress of being a “fake party” with fake Twitter followers.

“Wait for more for the exploits of Indian National Congress in the case of fake followers,” the BJP leader said in his tweet.

In other news, the Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday filed a case against Twitter for using a distorted map of India on their website.
