Liquor Rebates No More In Delhi-NCR Region

Last updated on March 1st, 2022 at 03:21 am

Liquor is not going to flow that easily into the National Capital Territory of Delhi any more. According to a confirmed note, the Excise Department has now announced that it has decided to discontinue discounts, rebates and concessions on MRP of liquor.

This has been done keeping in mind cases and complaints where a large number of people gather outside liquor shops disturbing the general atmosphere of residents living around. In the Arvind Kejriwal government, liquor stores have comfortably opened in various parts of Delhi-NCR. These function in a orderly manner through the day till the night hours.

But the result of handing over discounts offered by licenses through their retail vends has not yielded great benefits. The department has also stated concerns over spread of the Covid-19 virus due to large crowds in the city, especially near liquor shops. Further, a formal statement by the department also states that such discounting is leading to unhealthy market practices being deployed purely for short term business gains by some licensees and is leading to distortion of markets.

“The intent of the government in regard to discounting was to promote consumer choice and healthy competition and determination of price by market forces. The discounting of this nature was not the objective of the government while permitting the discounts in the new Excise Regime,” read the statement.

The department ordered all L7Z licenses to strictly abide by Rule 54(3) of the Delhi Excise Rules, 2010 and not give concession, rebate or discount on the MRP of liquor.  It added that if any violation is brought to the notice of the authorities, “actions as per Rules and Act as well as penal action as per the tender document shall be initiated against the defaulting licensee.”
