Leaders Of 13 Opposition Parties Express Shock Over PM Modi’s Silence Over Communal Violence

Leaders of 13 opposition parties on Saturday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s silence over the recent incidents of hate speech and communal violence in the country. The leaders also expressed deep concern over the latest Jahangirpuri Violence.

In a joint statement, the opposition leaders including Congress president Sonia Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, TMC Supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and her Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand counterparts MK Stalin and Hemant Soren, questioned PM Modi’s silence over the violence during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in Jahangirpuri. The other signatories included CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, his CPI counterpart D Raja, Forward Bloc’s Debabrata Biswas, and RSP’s Manoj Bhattacharya.

They said, “We are shocked at the silence of the Prime Minister, who has failed to speak against the words and actions of those who propagate bigotry and those who, by their words and actions, incite and provoke our society.”

The leaders urged people to maintain peace and harmony in the country and demanded strict punishment for the perpetrators of communal violence. They further said in the joint appeal, “We call upon all our party units across the country to independently and jointly work for maintaining peace and harmony.”

Incidents of communal violence were reported in many states of the country on the occasion of Ram Navami on April 10. The incidents of communal violence also erupted in the national capital during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in the Jahangirpuri area of Delhi. There was also stone-pelting during the clashes between the two communities.

There have also been sharp divisions over the Hijab row in Karnataka on April 10. Reportedly, violence also erupted on the JNU campus over the serving of non-veg food in the hostel mess on Ram Navami.

In recent weeks, religious clashes have broken out between the majority Hindu and minority Muslim communities during religious processions in India.
