Kolkata Medical College Principal Quits After Doctor’s Rape-Murder, Nationwide Outcry
The case of a 31-year-old doctor’s rape and murder on the campus of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata is fueling the headlines and in between these headlines, the principal of this institution Dr. Sandip Ghosh has stepped down from his position. The doctor was discovered deceased in the hospital’s seminar hall early Friday morning.
Dr. Ghosh announced his resignation in growing protests and intense scrutiny. He said his inability to endure the “humiliation” on social media and claimed that “political statements” were being falsely attributed to him.
Accused of victim-blaming, Dr. Ghosh has firmly denied making any such remarks, stating, “Students are being incited to push for my removal. I want justice for the victim. I am being wrongfully accused. The deceased was like a daughter to me, and as a parent, I am stepping down.”
Dr. Ghosh, an orthopedic surgeon by profession emphasized that his decision to resign is also motivated by his desire to protect his reputation which he believes has been tarnished unfairly. “People doubted I would resign, but I am an honest man. Since taking charge, I’ve fought against corruption and worked tirelessly for the hospital’s betterment,” he added.

The resignation comes after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized Dr. Ghosh, accusing him of displaying indifference towards the victim with “misleading statements” and a “carefree attitude” in the aftermath of the tragic event.
A civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy has been arrested in connection with the crime. The incident has triggered protests by doctors across the country demanding justice for the victim and accountability from those in power.
