Karnataka announces Rs 1610 crore relief package & earns Rs 474 crore in liquor sales

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Wednesday(May 6,2020) announced about Covid-19 relief package worth Rs 1,610 crore to benefit the various levels of people in the state.

Covid-19 relief package in Karnataka

The Covid-19 relief package of worth Rs 1,610 crore will benefit and consider about farmers in the front look. It will then follow to benefit MSMEs, flower growers, washermen, handloom weavers, barbers and autorickshaw and taxi drivers.

While speaking about the relief package the Karnataka CM told, “A package of Rs. 1610 crores will be released as Covid-19 financial package. One time compensation of Rs 5000 will be given to 230,000 barbers and 775,000 drivers,”

As we know that, the migrant workers faced a lot of issues without proper work and wage during lockdown 2.0. CM Yediyurappa addressed them as well and said, they should stay as the construction works have resumed in the state during lockdown 3.0. He also said that, the Karnataka state govt have sent around 1 lakh people in 3500 buses and trains, back to their hometowns as they wish to go home. But, he also asserted that he would welcome and appreciate if they chose to stay back and resume the construction works they were involved before.

The statement from Karnataka CM Office also read that the payment of fixed charges in ‘Electricity bills’ of the large industries will be deferred without penalty and interest for a period of two months.

Liquor sales in Karnataka

Meanhwile, the reports from the Excise Department about the liquor sales from the first three days of re-opening is absolute shocker in the media and Internet.

  • the first day(May 4) of liquor sales in Karnataka collected Rs 45 crore.
  • the second day(May 5) of liquor sales in Karnataka collected Rs 197 crore on the second day(May 5,2020). The previous record of liquor sales in a single day in Karnataka was Rs 170 crore on December 28, 2019.
  • the third day(May 6) of liquor sales in Karnataka collected mammoth Rs 231.6 crore.

Based on the three days report, Karnataka liquor sales have collected Rs. 473.6 crore in total and it is notable that, there was 11% price hike in excise duty which is an addition of 6% already announced in the budget.
