Iran extends an invitation to India for president-elect Ebrahim Raisi’s swearing-in ceremony

India has reportedly accepted Iran’s invitation for the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Ayatollah Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi next month. The development came during a meeting between Indian External Affairs MinisterS Jaishankar and the Iranian President-elect on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, S Jaishankar made a detour to Tehran on his way to Russia’s capital Moscow to hand over a personal congratulatory message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President-elect Raisi.

“Thank President-elect Ebrahim Raisi for his gracious welcome. Handed over a personal message from PM @narendramodi,” Jaishankar had tweeted.

As per a tweet posted by the Iranian foreign ministry, Jaishankar delivered a hand-written congratulatory message from PM Modi to President-elect Ebrahim Raisi.

With this move, Jaishankar became the first foreign dignitary to meet the Iranian president-elect since he won the presidential elections on June 19 by a landslide victory to overthrow Hassan Rouhani. Raisi is scheduled to be sworn in as the President of Iran on August 5.

Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar also expressed his appreciation for President-elect Raisi’s warm sentiments for India.

“Deeply value his strong commitment to strengthen our bilateral ties and expand cooperation on regional and global issues,” the EAM said in his tweet.

Reportedly, India is one of the very few countries to be invited by the Iranian government for Raisi’s swearing-in ceremony. However, India is yet to confirm who will represent the country at the ceremony.

Furthermore, EAM Jaishankar held “useful discussions” with his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif on key regional and global affairs during his technical halt to Tehran.

As per reports by the Iranian media, the two foreign ministers discussed the current security situation in Afghanistan amid the ongoing withdrawal of US troops from the landlocked country. Following the talks, they called for enhancing intra-Afghan dialogue to reach a comprehensive political partnership between the warring sides.

India’s External affairs ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi also noted that the two ministers exchanged views on regional and global issues along with the situation in Afghanistan.

“They also discussed the evolving situation in Afghanistan and expressed concerns over the deteriorating security there,” he said.

Earlier this week, Iran hosted crucial talks between Afghan government officials and representatives from the Taliban group with the aim of reaching a political solution to bring peace to the country.
