Inhuman Ragging Kills the 18 year old Medical Student in Gujarat
On November 16, 2024, a first year medical student from a village named Jesda, in Gujarat died tragically due to the inhuman ragging by his seniors inside the college campus. On Sunday, the police reported to the media that they have filed the case and began their investigation after receiving a statement from the anti-ragging committee of the medical college.
“The autopsy has been conducted and the medical report has been asked to submit a report on the incident. We have registered an accidental death report at Balisana Police Station. We have written to the anti-ragging committee of the medical college to submit their report at the earliest. We will take the required action based on it” said Ravindra Patel, Patan SP.
Shocking statement of his cousin & a witness
“We received a call from the college yesterday and were told that Anil collapsed and has been hospitalised. When we reached here, we came to know that third-year students ragged him. We want justice.” – Anil’s cousin Dharmendra
A first-year student reported that a group of 8 people were involved in the ragging. They had separated the first year students based on the regions they came from and they forced them to stand for nearly three hours.
“Based on the region from where we came, we were told to gather at designated hostel blocks around 9 pm. This was communicated through a WhatsApp group….” (it was said to The Indian Express reporter)
“They forced us to keep standing and asked us not to get agitated. At last, a student, who was also standing with us, fell unconscious. We rushed him to a hospital where he died.”
What does the Dean say?
“As soon as we came to know that he had collapsed, we hospitalised him. He told police that he was ragged and made to stand for three hours. We have informed the cops and the family and will try to take strict action” – the statement given by the Dean of medical college, Hardik Shah.
Has the ragging been completely removed from institutions?
It is heartbreaking to witness the report submitted by the UGC that their helpline has received 1,240 ragging cases from January 1,2023 to April 28, 2024. The registration of ragging cases and complaints are rising to 45% from the previous year. Though, there are many restrictions and rules are implemented to secure the lives of the students consumed by the ragging at the educational institutions, the brutality still continues.
