Indian Abstains From UN Security Council Vote Against Ukraine Attack By Russia

Russia – In a vote of abstinence, India has refrained from voting out of the UN encouraged to vote against the Ukrainian attack. A US-sponsored UN Security Council resolution spoke in the strongest manner against the Russian onslaught on the people of Ukraine.

But the resolution could not pass as there were three countries that abstained from saying anything. This includes India, China, and one more middle eastern nation.

While India spoke about dialogue as the best way of a resolution, it refrained from voting out, owing to the delicate economic balance it is having to maintained vis-a-vie Russia.

Despite getting some American pressure, India continues to keep itself on the sidelines of a verbal outburst. At the meeting and after that too, India stayed firm on its stand at the UNSC vote, and later issued a sharp Explanation of Vote that called for a return to the path of diplomacy.

“India is deeply disturbed by the recent turn of developments in Ukraine,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador TS Tirumurti, said, explaining India’s abstention.

“All member states should honor principles of international law and UN Charter, as these provide a constructive way forward,” said India, asserting that it had maintained its “consistent, steadfast and balanced position”.

The statement called for respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and immediate cessation of violence and hostilities – words conveyed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call the moment the first attack happened. Despite threats to harsh sanctions, Vladimir Putin has thrown caution to the wind and continued ahead in his Ukrainian onslaught, putting the future of Russian people in great peril. Meanwhile the US has urged the Ukrainian President to evacuate, which he has flatly refused.
