India Wins Men’s Hockey 5s Asia Cup, Qualifies 2024 World Cup
The draws for the first-ever FIH Hockey5s World Cup were held. The Indian men’s team will compete in pool B with Egypt, Switzerland, and Jamaica, while the women’s team will compete in pool C with the United States, Poland, and Namibia.
The tournament will take place from January 24-31, 2024 in Muscat, Oman. The Indian men’s team qualified by defeating Pakistan in the men’s Hockey5s Asia Cup final, while the women’s team qualified by defeating Thailand in the women’s Hockey5s Asia Cup final.
On 2nd September, India won the Men’s Hockey 5s Asia Cup by beating Pakistan in a penalty shootout. Pakistan was leading at half-time, but India managed to equalize before the end of the match.
In the shootout, India scored two goals while their goalkeeper saved both of Pakistan’s attempts. India had a strong start but Pakistan took the lead. However, India quickly equalized and then took the lead.
Pakistan scored two late goals before half-time. In the second half, India responded quickly to Pakistan’s goal and managed to equalize again. India then attacked aggressively, causing defensive errors from Pakistan.
The victory also secured India’s qualification for the 2024 FIH Hockey 5s World Cup. Hockey India announced cash rewards for the players and support staff.
Hockey India has announced that each player of the men’s Hockey 5s Asia Cup Championship will receive a cash award of Rs 2.00 lakh.
The team emerged victorious in a nail-biting final against Pakistan, winning 4-4 (2-0 SO) in a penalty shoot-out.
The tournament also served as Asia’s qualifying tournament for the FIH Men’s Hockey5s World Cup Oman 2024.
The Indian team had a remarkable performance, with Mohammed Raheel, Jugraj Singh, and Maninder Singh scoring goals during the regulation time.

Gurjot Singh and Maninder Singh scored in the shoot-out to secure the win. To celebrate the team’s success, Hockey India will also give Rs 1.00 lakh each to the support staff.
Hockey India President Padma Shri Dr Dilip Tirkey congratulated the team on their qualification for the World Cup and winning the gold medal. He praised their hard work and preparations, offering his best wishes for the upcoming World Cup.
Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh also congratulated the players and support staff, expressing confidence in their ability to perform well in the World Cup.
The Indian Men’s Hockey team is now focused on carrying their momentum into the Hockey 5s World Cup in Muscat next year.
