India and Pakistan armies held brigadier-level meeting to discuss ceasefire agreement along LoC

A brigade commander-level flag meeting took place between India and Pakistan armies on Friday at the Poonch-Rawalkot crossing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. The senior officials of the two armies came together for the commander-level flag meeting to take forward the ceasefire agreement signed between India and Pakistan last month. 

“Post the DGsMO Understanding 2021, a Brigade Commander Level Flag Meeting was held between Indian and Pakistan Army at Poonch-Rawalkot Crossing Point on 26 Mar 2021 to discuss implementation mechanism as per the understanding,” the Indian Army said in a tweet.

On February 25, the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan agreed to observe a ceasefire along the LoC. According to a statement issued by the Defence Ministry, both neighbouring sides agreed to strictly adhere to all agreements, understandings and cease firing along the LoC and other sectors.

“The two sides reviewed the situation along the Line of Control and all other sectors in a free, frank, and cordial atmosphere,” the statement noted. 

Speaking to Hindustan Times, a senior official said that the ceasefire along the LoC is holding good and the brigade-commander level flag meeting was scheduled to ensure that both sides comply with the understanding reached between the DGMOs of the two armies. 

On Thursday, Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane revealed that the areas around the LoC have been silent for the first time in five to six years as not a single shot was fired this month. 

“I am glad to inform that in the whole month of March, we have not had a single shot fired at the Line of Control (LoC) barring an odd incident. It is for the first time in about five or six years that the LoC has been silent. That really bodes well for the future,” he said while speaking at the India Economic Conclave. 

The ceasefire pact came at a crucial time when both India and Pakistan were witnessing increased tensions in areas around the border. As per a Bloomberg report on March 22, the UAE played a crucial role in brokering the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.

“The India-Pakistan cease-fire marked a milestone in secret talks brokered by the UAE that began months earlier, according to officials aware of the situation who asked not to be identified,” Bloomberg reported.
