India Invests Heavily Into Nuclear Power Plants Towards Paris Agreement Promise

Paris -India plans to have nine nuclear reactors by 2024, confirmed news reports have said. Moving away from the use of fossil fuels, the Narendra Modi government is quietly making its mark and moving towards peaceful use of uranium.

According to confirmed reports, India will have nine nuclear reactors by 2024 and a new nuclear project, the first in northern India, will come up 150 kms away from Delhi in Haryana’s Gorakhpur, the government informed the Rajya Sabha.

In the November Glasgow COP26 Summit, Prime minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi determined India would produce 500 GW of capacity though by 2030. His promise is that 50% of the capacity to be built from renewables will be accomplished by 2030. He did say so at the COP26 which is looking at participating nations to show some progress.

According to Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh said, “By 2024, India will have nine nuclear reactors plus 12 new additional ones which were approved during the Covid times with a capacity of 9,000 MW. Five new sites are also being identified,” in different parts of the country.

“We are going to have a nuclear project, the first of its kind, in North India just about 150 kms from Delhi in a small township called Gorakhpur in Haryana,” said Mr. Singh, also Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office. From the sound of how he is talking, it is becoming clear that India has all the intentions to get into nuclear power generation in the coming years.
