Google Announces Major Leadership Reshuffling in Key Divisions
Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai has announced major new leadership roles across four of the company’s key units: Search, Ads, Gemini and Assistant. The restructuring was announced by Pichai to employees where the long-time head of search, Prabhakar Raghavan, is to take on the position of Chief Technologist. Ads, Geo, and Commerce responsibilities will be given to Nick Fox as he succeeded Raghavan. The reorganization also affects Google’s AI plans: Gemini app creators are transferred to Google DeepMind; the Assistant team is transferred to the platforms and devices division.
Raghavan’s new Position and Fox’s Promotion
After 12 years as the head of different teams at Google, it’s time for Prabhakar Raghavan to become the company’s Chief Technologist. Here, he will be in a position to report directly to Mr. Sundar Pichai the chief executive officer, and other executives in establishing technical leadership and ensuring a healthy promotion of technology across the organization. Pichai said this decision enables Raghavan to move back to computer science as he climbs up the corporate ladder.
Raghavan is being replaced by Nick Fox who has been assigned a director of Google’s Search, Ads, Geo as well as Commerce. Fox is one of the main representatives of the company within the search and ads division and has worked on the creation of Google Fi and Enhanced RCS messaging. This promotion honors his knowledge and management skills within the company.
Reorganizing AI and Assistant Teams
Google is restructuring its research and development division, specifically to integrate an optimized approach towards AI. Members of the Gemini app team including its head, Sissie Hsiao, will be absorbed into Google DeepMind, Google’s artificial intelligence research wing. This action should help to cluster AI talent and step up work in this critically important field.
