Former JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar joins Congress, Jignesh Mavani extends support to the party

Bihar – Another day of chaos in the Congress party was witnessed on Tuesday. As Congress Party Punjab Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu presented his resignation, there were some quite prominent additions to the national party. Former JNU student union head and CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar joined Congress with the idea of ‘saving India’ and that he believed the grand party can lead the fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Furthermore, Gujarat’s independent MLA Vadgam Jignesh Mevani too has extended his support to Congress ‘ideologically’ but couldn’t take formal membership of the party as he is still a sitting MLA. Mevani said, “I could not join the Congress formally due to technical reasons. I am an independent MLA, if I join a party, I may not continue as an MLA…I am part of the Congress ideologically but I will fight the upcoming Gujarat polls from Congress symbol.”

Kumar’s joining of Congress was in presence of Congress general secretary KC Venugopal and Gujarat Congress working president Hardik Patel along with Rahul Gandhi. After the induction of Kumar, Venugopal said addressing media at Congress headquarters, “Kanhaiya Kumar is a symbol of the fight for freedom of expression in this country. He fought against fundamentalism as a student leader. The joining of kind of dynamic personality will fill the entire cadre of Congress with enthusiasm.”

It is said that many sections of the grand old party have expressed their uneasiness over Kanhaiya’s joining the party. BJP didn’t shy away from commenting on the new addition to the Congress party. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya tweeted, “On the anniversary of the surgical strike, Congress to admit Kanhaiya and Mevani of ‘Bharat tere tukde honge’ fame. This can’t be a mere coincidence.”

Congress has been witnessing an existential crisis since the 2014 elections. Kumar and Mevani are now being viewed as a big boost after several young leaders left the party including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sushmita Dev, Jitin Prasada, and Priyanka Chaturvedi. But Kumar’s controversial past can very well bring big baggage of polemics for the party.
