India is going to host its first India-Central Asia Summit on Thursday. The Prime Minister scheduled the summit in a virtual format where the leaders will be discussing steps to strengthen the relations within the region.
The summit will mostly be focused on discussing the evolving regional security situation. The summit will witness the participation of Kazakhstan’s Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Uzbekistan’s Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan’s Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyz Republic.
The Union Ministry of External Affairs asserted that the summit is first-of-its-kind participation for and within India. The regional discussion, commonalities, and persisting issues will be discussed throughout the summit. It will also aim to enhance the India-Central Asia partnership.
One such trailer of what the partnership is aimed at was seen during the participation of the secretaries of National Security Councils of Central Asian countries in the Afghanistan-related discussion concerning the Regional Security Dialogue.
It was held in New Delhi in November last year and the countries discussed ways to approach Afghanistan, which is controlled by the Taliban, in the coming years.
The leaders of these five countries were invited as chief guests for Republic Day which is celebrated on January 26 but the visit was canceled owing to the increasing COVID-19 cases. The ministry also stressed that the summit highlights the efforts by the country to grow engagement with the Central Asian countries. This comes under India’s renewed foreign policy or “extended neighborhood”, as the website claims.
