On Monday farmer unions in Haryana held a meeting in Karnal demanding filing cases against officials and entities responsible for lathicharge on farmers last week. They also demanded compensation of INR 25 lakh to the next of kin of farmer who succumbed to injures during police action.
The farmer unions have also threatened to indefinitely lay blockage to Karnal mini-Secretariat if their demands remain unfulfilled by September 6.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) president Gurnam Singh Charuni addressed the meeting in Karnal on Monday. During the meeting he alleged that the government was responsible for unleashing violence on farmers who were carrying out peaceful protests.
This injured 40 people, including serious injuries to 11 people. The unions have also demanded government job to the next of kin of Sushil Kajal, who allegedly died to the injuries incurred during lathicharge, along with INR 2 lakh each for the injured farmers.
“Now we are fed up with the famer-police clashes every day, we need a strong decision and we will raise this issue with the morcha leaders for their support for farmers of Haryana,” Charuni said.
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha has said that if the Manohar Lal government fails to dismiss those responsible for ordering the lathicharge on farmers immediately, it can be assumed that the responsible official was acting on the instructions.
“It is utterly shocking that the Chief Minister is choosing to brush aside the barbaric and illegal instructions as only a wrong choice of words. It once again clearly reiterates what we have been saying, which is that the Manohar Lal-Chautala government is at war with its own people,” said the press statement by Samyukt Kisan Morcha.
The decision was taken at a Mahapanchayat meeting called at the Gharuanda grain market of Haryana’s Karnal. The farmers said if their demands remain unfulfilled by September 6, they would siege to Karnal’s mini secretariat indefinitely on September 7.
