A number of fake AI-generated images depicting Donald Trump surfaced online over the past week. Many falsely showed him getting arrested. Although the images were pointed out as fake by a lot of people, a few still seemed to be tricked.
The former US president could get indicted overpayment of hush money to a woman he allegedly had an affair with, the BBC reported. He hasn’t been charged with a crime yet.
On Thursday, Trump took to his own social media platform Truth Social to share an AI-generated image showing him kneeling in prayer.
So, how can someone distinguish a real image from an AI-generated one? Just keep an eye on things that look ‘off’. Although the recent images circulating online looked hyper-real, a closer look gave away a number of details to eventually declare the image a fake, such as Trump’s too-short arm or his head that seemed to have been superimposed on the image.
Current technology isn’t quite good at depicting certain body parts, particularly hands, AI expert Henry Ajder said.
There are quite a lot more weird details as well, such as faces with blurred-out features and unnatural skin tones. Moreover, in certain images, officers were seen chasing the president but they were looking in a totally different direction. AI technology is yet to completely master an accurate depiction of eyes.
Nevertheless, scores of AI experts have raised concerns over faked imagery, the extraordinary speed of progress within the field, and the potential for misuse. The rapid evolution of synthetic content is gradually making the line between authentic and fake content disappear.
While Trump’s fame made identifying the fake images relatively easy, it could be a far more difficult task with images of unknown people.
