Fairwork India Ratings 2021: Flipkart tops the ranking with the best working conditions for app-based gig workers

Flipkart, the Walmart-owned e-commerce company, has been ranked one in the list of Fairwork India Ratings 2021. The list highlights the working conditions of gig workers of various application-based companies. Flipkart was followed by Urban Company at second position in the list. The largest marketplace offering home services in Asia was followed at third place by Tata-owned online grocery platform BigBasket. With zero scores each, mobility firms like Ola, Uber and Porter were placed at the bottom of the list.

The Fairwork India Team is headed by the Centre for IT and Public Policy (CITAPP), International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B), in collaboration with Oxford University. The team has presented the Fairwork India Ratings 2021: Labour Standards in the Platform Economy report that assesses the working conditions of gig workers of various app-based platforms. This year was the third year of listing that reviewed the platforms through 11 arenas – service domains such as domestic and personal care services, logistics, food delivery, e-pharmacy and transportation. The 5 principles that the listing of fair work was based on included fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation.

The ratings were based on multiple arenas chalked down by amalgamation of desk research, interviews of the workers and evidence shared by the platforms. The ratings scored 11 companies including BigBasket, Amazon, Dunzo, Ola, Flipkart, PharmEasy, Swiggy, Porter, Zomato, Urban Company, and Uber.

Interestingly, out of 10 maximum points to grab, no company was able to score more than 7 in this year’s ratings. Flipkart was alone to score 7 standing at the first spot on the list, while Urban Company scored 5 points. Food delivery platform Swiggy scored 4 and Zomato managed to score 3 points. E-commerce companies Amazon, Dunzo, and Pharmeasy each scored 1 point.  

“We hope that platforms, workers, regulators, and consumers, will use the Fairwork framework and ratings to imagine, and realize, a fairer platform economy in India,” said Professors Balaji Parthasarathy and Janaki Srinivasan, the principal investigators of the team. Researchers Mounika Neerukonda, Pradyumna Taduri, Amruta Mahuli, Kanikka Sersia, and Funda Ustek-Spilda, comprised the rest of the team.
