Billionaire Elon Musk is the new largest shareholder of social media platform Twitter, and this only makes it easier for him to introduce the new edit button to the popular interactive platform.
Leaving a poll to make the decision, he recently sent off a tweet asking ‘Do you want an edit button?’ The Tesla CEO and SpaceX Founder Elon Musk has taken a 9.2% stake in Twitter, worth $3 billion. He now stands in a position to push for what has not happened in years- get a ‘edit’ button on the shelf.
The poll isn’t a joke and therefore the Indian CEO Parag Agarwal could say ‘The consequences here will be serious; so please vote carefully.’ The poll came with two options listed by Musk (perhaps intentionally mistyped as ‘yse’ and ‘on’). This may or may not be a clever nod to spelling mistakes, one of the major reasons Twitter users have been asking for an edit button.
The company had announced though on April 1 that it was looking at adding in the ‘edit’ button but then a statement followed, “We cannot confirm or deny but we may edit our statement later.” So, many thought it was an April Fool’s prank being played on them.
The microblogging website has controlled the chances of editing for the longest time. It is a popular medium for many media professionals and politicians. Some 25 percent users still feel the edit button shouldn’t be there because it helps maintain the authenticity of the emotion and information being tweeted. It’s like taking a competitive examination with multiple-choice questions. You have to get it right the first time; or do you get a negative mark.
Some have argued that tweets go viral and there shouldn’t be a way to edit them, because that changes context and emotion too. So, for this there could be a way to make tweets editable only after a certain period of time after they are published. This would help users correct spelling mistakes, tag people they forgot to tag or make other quick changes in important tweets. As of now, such tweets need to be deleted and posted again.
