Elon Musk Asks Whether He Should Step Down From Twitter, Voters Said Yes

Elon Musk polled on Twitter whether he should step down as head of Twitter. He promised that he will abide by the results. Most (98 lakh) voters said ‘yes’, he should leave the post.

Elon Musk, Twitter’s new CEO and owner, asked users to vote for him to resign as the company’s head on Sunday.

At 6:20 a.m. ET on Monday, the poll closed with 57.5 percent of respondents calling for the billionaire’s resignation. The poll was closed after more than 17 million votes.

Musk stated that he would follow the results of the poll. It is not clear if he will do so. Tesla shares — another Musk company — closed less than 1% Monday.

Musk stated in court that he expected to decrease his time at Twitter and hire someone else to manage it. However, Musk tweeted on Sunday that there was no successor to him at the social media company.

He wrote, “The question isn’t finding a CEO. The question is finding one who can keep Twitter alive.”

Musk responded to speculations that he had already selected a successor. The billionaire stated: “No one wants Twitter’s job who can keep it alive.” There is no successor.

Twitter polls can be described as straw polls. They are informal and are not comparable to professional public opinions research. Inauthentic accounts or bots may be able register a response to a Twitter survey.

Musk’s Sunday poll was prompted by online backlash following sudden policy changes made by the “Chief Whit”, as he called himself, to Twitter users in the past week.

On Sunday, the company launched a new promotion policy for social media platforms. 

This prohibited users from sharing links to other accounts on social media. Paul Graham, founder of Y Combinator, and longtime Musk friends, were dismayed by the policy, which Musk later retracted.

To finance the Twitter takeover, he used shares in this year’s election. To help him at Twitter, he has also recruited talent from SpaceX and Tesla, including engineers and executives.

Tesla isn’t the only company facing a challenge: Tesla is currently offering discounts to Chinese customers, indicating a weaker demand.
