Economist and Sanskrit Scholar Bibek Debroy Passes Away; PM Modi Honors His Legacy
The Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) Bibek Debroy passed away at the age of 69. He is a well-known economist who contributed to India’s economic policy.
According to the report of NDTV, “Bibek Debroy passed away today at 7 am due to intestinal obstruction,” AIIMS Delhi said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a heartfelt message on X, formerly Twitter.
“Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in economics, history, politics, and spirituality. He made significant contributions to public policy and worked passionately to make our ancient texts accessible to youth,” PM Modi said.

A Padma Shri awardee Bibek Debroy educations were done at Ramakrishna Mission School in Narendrapur, Presidency College in Kolkata, Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge, Debroy held numerous influential roles throughout his career. He served as Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune, worked at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in Delhi, and led a Ministry of Finance-UNDP project on legal reforms.
Beyond economics, Debroy was a scholar of Sanskrit, translating major texts such as the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, making them accessible to modern readers. He also served as a member of NITI Aayog until June 2019 and contributed to several newspapers as a consulting editor.
