Delhi Pollution: SC Urges Center and States to Closing Factories, Construction, and Impose Work from Home

Delhi -On Monday, The Delhi government submitted a proposal to the Supreme Court for lockdown in the capital due to rising air pollution. The Delhi Government has already said the closing of physical classes in schools, educational institutions, and universities, except those where exams are being conducted, for seven days from Monday.

 Except for those associated with essential services, all administration workplaces, agencies, and independent bodies have requested to resume the work from home option. No demolition and construction activities are permitted in the capital till 17 November. 

In the last 24 hours, Delhi’s air quality has shifted imperceptibly from severe to the poor category, with the AQI reported at 338. Neighboring NCR regions Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida, and Gurgaon’s air quality was recorded at 368, 312, 357 and 301. 

Furthermore, the SC asked the Centre to call for an emergency meeting with the states and different authorities on Tuesday to plan out measures to decrease the harmful toxic smog and stated it would hear the matter again the following day. 

Work From Home

In its hearing, the honorable Supreme Court on Monday directed the Center and concerning states to make an apt decision on which vehicles, industries, and power plants can be halted for the time being to tackle Delhi’s growing air pollution. Meanwhile, it likewise urged states to implement work from home policy.

The Center told SC that the stubble burning issue is not the significant reason for Delhi’s rising pollution as it adds to just 10% of filthy air into the environment. This comes as the Delhi government informed the apex court that it is prepared to take measures, for example, complete lockdown to control nearby emissions. The apex court blamed the AAP government for only focusing on stubble-burning as the problem of pollution in its court appeal.

The Delhi Traffic Police has stated that it would charge all vehicles running without a (PUC) certificate. More than 550 staff have been deployed in 170 areas. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has started to handle dust contamination under its ward in its winter action plan. 

The Haryana government has requested that all schools in four locales near the capital remain closed till 17 November. Considering harmful smog haze and awful air quality in Delhi for longer than seven days at this point, all administration and institutions have been ordered to stay closed in the National Capital Territory (NCT) region of Delhi. This request simply comes a day after the Delhi government declared comparative measures. 

The disaster management board also intends to reduce the number of vehicles on streets by 30%, explicit measures taken to accomplish this step.

In Delhi, regularly positioned as the world’s most polluted capital, air quality has declined because of harvest stubble burning, smoke from transport, coal-fired factories outside the city and different businesses. Also, the open garbage burning adds to the worst air quality.
