A worker inside the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of President Ramnath Kovind, has tested positive for Coronavirus disease, news agency ANI reported on Tuesday. Following the development, approximately 100 people working inside the Rashtrapati Bhavan have been reportedly quarantined in the complex.

Furthermore, at least 125 families living near the Rashtrapati Bhavan complex have been asked to remain in self-isolation as mandated by the guidelines issued by the Health Ministry for COVID-19 pandemic.

Officials at the Rashtrapati Bhavan have affirmed that social distancing norms are being strictly followed at the complex. President Ramnath Kovind and his family have been in self-isolation since the lockdown was imposed in the country. Official meetings related to state affairs are being conducted through video conferencing.

Earlier in April, President Kovind urged the citizens to follow the guidelines issued by the Central government and practice social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

On April 21 morning, the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in India crossed 18,600, out of whom over 3,200 people have recovered from the disease.

The country witnessed the biggest jump in the number of deaths in a day with 47 people losing their lives to the disease in the last 24 hours. The COVID-19 death toll is nearing 600 in the country. With over 4,500 cases, Mumbai has the highest number of infected cases in India, with Delhi in the second position having over 2,000 confirmed cases.

India’s 1.3 billion population is under a strict nationwide lockdown imposed to tackle the spread of Coronavirus pandemic. The lockdown was extended by the Narendra Modi government on April 14 for 19 days till May 3. As per the announcement made by PM Modi, some restrictions in a few selected sectors were partially eased by the government on April 20 in order to continue the working of the economy.

However, some state government including Delhi, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh decided not to lift the restrictions amid the rising infected cases in the states. The Central government has identified over 170 districts across the multiple states as COVID-19 hotspots where stern lockdown measures are being followed by the administration.
