Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, party general secretary Congress party announced in Lucknow that their party would give 40 percent tickets to women candidates in the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
She further added that they have decided that in the upcoming Vidhan Sabha polls, the Congress party will give 40 per cent tickets to women. The election to the 403-member UP assembly is due early next year.
Analysts believe that this step is taken to woo women voters of UP. Vadra said that the decision has been taken considering that women will fully participate in UP elections actively.
In 2017 assembly polls, eleven out of 114 Congress candidates were women. Similarly, even BJP had given tickets to 43 women in its list of 384 candidates while the Samajwadi Party had given tickets to 33 women.
Clarifying the motive behind this announcement, Priyanka Gandhi said that when they were campaigning in UP in 2019, a few women students from Allahabad university told how the rules on campus and hostels were different for men and women. This is a decision for them. This decision is for the woman who told Gandhi during Ganga Yatra that there is no school in her village.
Focusing on the empowerment of women in India, in 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Mamata Banerjee’s TMC announced that it would give 40 percent of its tickets to women. The party fielded 17 women candidates out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. Out of these, nine emerged victorious.
Giving voice to women in UP, Priyanka Gandhi is seen taking stern steps to make this is a reality. Congress president Sonia Gandhi approved the proposal of the constitution of the election campaign committee, election strategy and planning committee, election coordination committee, charge sheet committee, and election manifesto committee of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee last week. This approval gives women a major say in the decision making body of the country.
