In the Bypolls held on September 5, 2023, in seven assembly seats across India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in four seats, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured one seat.
The counting of votes began today (September 8) at 8 am in the respective states, and these results are significant as they serve as a test for the opposition alliance, I.N.D.I.A, against the BJP-led NDA ahead of upcoming state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In the initial trends, Chandy Oommen of Congress was leading in Puthuppally, Kerala, while Tafajjal Hossain of BJP was ahead in Boxanagar, Tripura, and Parwati Dass of BJP was leading in Bageshwar, Uttarakhand.
These bypolls were closely watched as they represented a significant political test for various parties and alliances in the run-up to state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The assembly bypoll results 2023 may have broader implications for the political landscape in India.
In Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar constituency, the BJP’s Parwati Dass emerged as the winner. This seat was vacated due to the passing of the BJP’s MLA and cabinet minister Chandan Ram Das earlier this year.
In Uttar Pradesh’s Ghosi constituency, the Samajwadi Party’s Sudhakar Singh is leading. This seat became vacant after the resignation of Samajwadi Party MLA Dara Singh Chauhan, who joined the BJP.
The Congress-UDF retained the Puthuppally Assembly constituency in Kerala, with Chandy Ommen winning by a significant margin. This seat was left vacant after the passing of Congress stalwart Oommen Chandy.
In West Bengal’s Dhupguri constituency, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured a win in a close contest with the BJP. The by-election was held due to the death of sitting BJP MLA Bishu Pada Ray.
In Jharkhand’s Dumri constituency, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate, Biebi Devi, is leading. Dumri saw a high voter turnout.
